Irina

Two weeks.

I went from having a year to come to terms with marrying Ezra, to having two weeks. Two weeks? How was I going to marry him without completely falling apart at the ceremony? Dinner had gone better than I expected and Jaspen was not a brute, as my father said, time and time, again. He’d been more pleasant than his son. I’d felt Ezra watching me all through the evening. Not in admiration. Oh, no. Whatever happened between us the night at the pasture was gone.

And in its place was a dark look that made a shiver race down my spine. Ezra was suspicious of me. I lied yesterday, telling him I was in Makaria, when truly I hadn’t been able to get out of bed. His memories clawed at the inside of my skull, and I found myself seeing images of battles every time I blinked. How I made it through dinner without giving anything away was a miracle.

But I couldn’t stay in my room forever today. The wedding needed to be planned, and a servant had already come to my door twice, knocking, requesting I go to the hall where the wedding would take place.

“You can do this,” I whispered to myself. “You are poised and calm. You are not the anger within you. You are not your father.”

I repeated the final words to myself several times, then finally got myself to open the door and leave my chamber. I planted a smile on my face as I walked into the hall, being nice to every servant I passed. Not until I was close to the hall did the memories that were not my own slam into me. Ezra, he was close. I leaned into the nearest wall to catch my breath and steady my nerves, willing the images to go away and leave me be.

But through my pain, Ezra was finding peace. He had not woken from his sleep last night. It was working.

“Irina, there you are,” Bishop said as he exited the hall.

I tried to walk to him, but had to rest against the wall again. I glanced worriedly around for Ezra, thankful he wasn’t out in the corridor.

“This is harming you too much,” he whispered.

“His memories, I’m seeing them still,” I murmured. “With mortals, it only lasts for a few seconds, but this… this is lasting days. I can’t seem to make it stop.” I clung to Bishop’s arm as he held me up. Each breath made my chest ache fiercely, and I clutched at it. But then I sensed Ezra coming closer and locked my knees so when he came around the corner, it appeared as though nothing was wrong.

“There you are,” Ezra stated. “It’s about time.”

“Sorry,” I said simply and walked around him and into the hall. “Oh!”

The place had changed so much since the night before, and I took in the number of candles and new candelabras being placed around the hall. The long tables were being switched out for rows and rows of chairs.
